Rainbow Alliance Sponsors Our First National Day of Silence

On Friday, April 12, ATMS students participated in GLSEN’s National Day of Silence. Every year on this day, people around the world take a vow of silence to highlight the silencing effects of anti-LGBTQ bullying and harassment of LGBTQ students at school.

Athena Middle School’s Rainbow Alliance used the day to help empower and support our LGBTQ+ friends. We had a merchandise and information table in the cafeteria all week to help students understand the purpose and seriousness of the vow of silence, so they could take part in responsible and respectful ways. We sold rainbow bracelets, flags, stickers, and pins all week so that students and staff could show their pride or support of our LGBTQ+ friends.

We were pleased to see so many of our students participate. Along with students all over the country, their silence was a deafening way to show support for our LGBTQ friends, whose voices may not always be heard. We showed that our voices have power. Moving forward, let’s never forget to use that power to support each other, to stand up for each other, to encourage and uplift each other…
